There are two biblical narratives that tell of Solomon's succession to David. The first narrative, in 1 Kings, is somewhat muddled and does not give a coherent explanation for choosing a younger brother as successor. This earlier work, 1 Kings, has David discover that Adonijah was about to attempt a coup, forcing his hand in anointing Solomon as his successor. His decision to overlook Adonijah is of course sensible, but David's also overlooked other senior sons when he chose Solomon.
The second narrative is in 1 Chronicles, which was a later rewrite of the Book of Kings and other books in the Deuteronomic history. Possibly recognising the problems inherent in the account in 1 Kings, the Chronicler simply has David announce that God has chosen Solomon as his heir. Thus, 1 Chronicles has a sensible and believable reason for choosing Solomon, even if we know that the Chronicler was really rewriting the earlier work and therefore wrote his own version of why Solomon was chosen.
Even though King David had other sons , he gave the power to King Solomon. As he was born to his favorite wife Bathsheba.
God chose Solomon (1 Chronicles 29:1), and the prophets (such as Nathan) were aware of this.
