Apartheid began in 1948 even though racism was around for a lot longer. In 1950 there was the Population Registration Act which labeled everyone as white, black, colored, or Asian. Lass were passed t prevent marriages between groups. Eighty percent of the land was reserved for the white minority and nonwhites had to carry documents to travel outside of their designated area. Land was taken from blacks and sold at low prices to white farmers. Groups like the ANC (African National Congress) opposed the white government. Nelson Mandela was one of that group and he was imprisoned fro 1963 to 1990.

Apartheid was opposed by the United Nations. The United States and United Kingdom placed economic sanctions on South Africa. Finally whites began changing policies starting with repealing some of of these laws relating to interracial sex and marriage. F.W. de Klerk took over in 1989 and he repealed the Population Registration Act. In 1990, de Klerk released Nelson Mandela. Mandela and de Klerk worked together to write a new Constitution that went into effect in 1994.
