In 321 B.C., the young prince Chandragupta Maurya founded the Mauryan Empire in India after overthrowing the Nanda Dynasty. He established a centralized and powerful state, uniting much of the Indian subcontinent under his rule. His reign marked the beginning of one of the largest empires in ancient India, which later reached its zenith under his grandson, Ashoka the Great.
