I have a 2000 silverado 1500 4.8l starter solenoid won't engage try to start i get a rapid chattering from the starter replaced starter still doing the samething what could the problem be?

That sounds far more like a badly corroded battery connection, Tight does not mean its good, remove the cable ends and inspect for rust, varnish or paint. Remember each cable has 2 ends. bend the cable back and forth abit if they bent to easy or are overly stiff you could have corrosion inside the cable itself.

I DO BELIEVE THE SOLENOID IS MOUNTED ON THE STARTER AND YOU WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE STARTER TO REPLACE THE SOLENOID remove the starter and take it down to your local auto parts store. they can bench test the starter and give you the proper solenoid if it needs to be replaced.
