When you cut the top off an African Violet, you throw the bottom away and keep the top! Actually, you can keep both. What I do is select some fat, sturdy top pieces about three inches long (trim off the bottom leaves) and leave them on a piece of paper to air dry for 24 hours.

Then put them into new pots, about one third in the soil (the part where the leaves have been removed). It is safe to water them now. If they have dried properly, they won't rot.

Drape some plastic over them, on sticks or pencils, loosely, with a bit of air allowed in, for a week or so, to keep the leaves from drying out. No direct sunlight until they are well rooted.

Now that you have these new plants as back-up, take a shot at some severe pruning of the main plant. Also trim the roots a little to lessen the shock and keep something of a balance between the top and the roots.
