I think you mean 1860s and yes I would because it would benefit the economy, and provide better defence against Irish Fenian raids and Americans. Also, the intercolonial railway linked with us would benefit us as trade, transportation, and communication would be easier.

Why was albert James smith against the conferderation?

Albert James Smith was against the Confederation because he feared that the taxpayers of prosperous Brunswick (his home State) would be saddled with a major part of the debts and the cost of developing the Province of Canada. He also feared that in the new Confederation Brunswick would lose control over its own destiny. After the Confederation became fact, he reconciled himself with the idea and became the Minister of Fisheries in the Confederation government six years after its establishment.

What would happen if New Brunswick didn't join confederation?

If New Brunswick hadn't joined Confederation in 1867, it likely would have faced economic and political challenges, potentially struggling to maintain stability and growth on its own. The absence of federal support could have hindered infrastructure development and trade, leading to slower economic progress. Additionally, the province may have seen increased tensions with neighboring regions, particularly with the United States and other Canadian provinces, affecting its strategic position in North America. Ultimately, New Brunswick's decision to join Confederation helped secure its political and economic future within a larger Canadian framework.

What were the problems of New Brunswick joining Confederation?

New Brunswick faced several challenges when joining Confederation in 1867, including economic concerns, as many feared that the provincial economy would not benefit from the union. There were apprehensions about losing political autonomy and local control over governance, as well as worries that the central government in Ottawa would prioritize the interests of larger provinces. Additionally, the lack of infrastructure, particularly railroads, raised concerns about connectivity and trade, which were essential for economic growth. These issues contributed to a mixed reception of Confederation within the province.

What province should Prince Edward Island trade with?

Newfoundland and labrador ==================== Prince Edward Island (PEI) connects with New Brunswick via the Confederation Bridge. The mainland end of the Confederation Bridge is near the Nova Scotia border. The Woods Island ferry service runs between PEI and Nova Scotia as well. There is no direct connection between PEI and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It would appear to be more likely that PEI would be trading with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia ahead of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

What strengths did New Brunswick bring to Canada?

Money, resources and they did not compete against Ontario and Quebec like they would have otherwise. The strength they brought was weakness, weakness to defend their own interests. New Brunswick as part of Confederation has not competed with Canada for Atlantic Shipping. This may be the greatest thing NB has done for Canada. If NB had not joined Confederation it would have been free to exploit it's natural harbours to compete with Ontario and Quebec, who spend massive amounts of Confederation money to build the St Lawrence Seaway so ocean ships could travel far inland. NB and other Maritime provinces did not compete with the Seaway. If they had they would have been much more prosperous and the Seaway would have never been built.
