In Drawn to Life how does the mayor die?

It's a long story. Mari is feeling all emotional and shaky, and doesn't think she's up to being Mayor someday. She runs out on her dad to get some time alone. The Mayor, who keeps the Book of Life with him all the time for whatever reason, goes over to the gate to the Forest World and thinks he hears Mari sneaking around in the trees. He calls out to "her" and who is it but Wilfre! He assaults the Mayor, steals the Book of Life, disappears into Shadow Lair, and the Mayor understandably goes into shock. He stays in shock and unconscious until you rescue Dr. Cure, who uselessly pronounces that there is nothing she can do. Then, his body disappears and Mari blames you, the hero, for his death. It's quite the tragic tale.

The Mayor is killed by Wilfre. Mari, who is really emotional and doesn't think she can be mayor, has run off and the Mayor mistakes Wilfre sneaking around the forest gate area for Mari. Wilfre comes out and steals the Book of Life, and then the Mayor presumably goes into shock and dies after a long while. Oh BTW, the useless Dr. Cure announces there's nothing she can do. Figures.
