1800- US only independent country in america. over next 20 years this would change how nations worked towards independence. To Americas north, Canada struggling for independence.(Canada first settles by french) 1763, British won control of Canada Canadian citizens; combo of french , Native american and English } Spoke different languages, beliefs, and religion. 1791- Britain separated country into two separated Providences: upper Canada and lower canada. Each had its own government. (British parliament still had to approve issues)

----------

Each had it's own Parliament until joined into the Province of Canada in 1841 and given more political control. Britain was trying to "encourage" it's North American colonies to independence and as a result were transferring ever greater amounts of control to their colonies. When in 1867 four of them wanted to join in a Confederation and take charge of their own economies and defense Britain was quick to approve.

Most of Canada was not part of a colony in the 1800's. On the West Coast British Columbia was a British Colony but the North and Western interior was Territory or owned by the Hudson Bay Company. In the territories Britain had total control, in Rupert's Land Hudson Bay Company had control as well.

That changed when Britain and the HBC transferred their land to the Canadian Confederation. After crushing a few resistance movements, including a few open rebellions, Canada took total control of those areas.

At the opening of the 1800's, it was all under British control. At the close of the 1800's it was under Canadian control.
