In the Harry Potter movies how did Harry supposedly get the scar on his forehead?

Voldemort tried killing him but his mother died trying to save him so her "love" protected him and all he got was a scar shapped like a lightning bolt. Supposedly when Voldemort gave him this scar he also transfered some of his power to Harry which is why he can speak to snakes.
