France gave the Statue (Liberty Enlightening the World) to the US as a gift on the centennial of the US in 1876. However, only the torch arm was transported to the US then, appearing at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, and later in New York City. After fund raising in both France and the US, the statue was finally completed, assembled on Bedloe's Island (Liberty Island) and dedicated on October 28, 1886.
