Yes I have been there and Quito (the capital) is like other places in the U.s most like miami. There are lots of malls, And the hotels are soo nice specialy J.W Marriot

Ecuador is very safe, with proper precautions. As with anywhere else in the world there are dangerous places to avoid. But if you are attentive to your surroundings most problems can be avoided.
