It was produced as a Horror movie. But no, in the eyes of today's audiences it is not scary.
Another ViewI think it's still scary. You kinda have to get in the mood, though: turn out all the lights and sit in the dark and watch it alone. The stark minimalism (I know that's a really pretentious thing to say, but I can't think of another term) of the black and white film and the low-budget costumes, makeup and props creates a very eerie, creepy atmosphere that all the special effects and fake gore in the world can't compare with.
I'd definitely rather watch Night of the Living Dead than half the high-tech garbage that passes for horror these days (like Mirrors, which I just watched tonight...now there's 100 minutes of my life I'd like to get back. Or the remakes of 13 Ghosts and House on Haunted Hill...two more movies that are loaded with special effects and high-quality blood and guts, yet are still less scary than an episode of Friends).
No, not really. It's a comedy.
