Not at all. None of the animals talk, and it is narrated by Spirit's thoughts, voiced by Matt Damon. The horses all act normally and Dreamworks tried hard to make it seem realistic as possible.
I think its because they mention them in some of the books based on spirit and his family Spirit's mother is called Esperanza and his father is called Strider. The mother's name is not just mentioned in books. It's in scripts, some reviews and Spirit stallion of the Cimarron fan sites and official sites. Though Strider isn't shown in the film he is shown in photos as a black Mustang which is why Spirit is Dun while his mother is Palomino. Spirit is a mixture of Palomino and black causing him to be Dun.
"The Spirit" graphic novel by Will Eisner , and later made into a movie , was not predicated upon any factual character . Additionally , if you're referring to "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" it is actually based on a true horse named "Donner". He lived in the middle 1800s...there is documented proof he did exist...and was real. The story too...

His father, Strider, is never shown in the actual movie. Although he is seen in photos to be pure black (as his mother is yellow and white mixed with black, creating yellow and black).
He doesnt really have a name, but his name would be Spirit, because he is the stallion of the cimmeron.
