After their conquest by Spanish conquistadors, it was renamed as Mexico City, and it became the capital of the "New Spain" (as Mexico became a colony of Spain). After Mexico's War of Independence, Mexico City still maintained its status as the most populous and important city of the new country, and thus became the official capital of Mexico.
