HISTORICAL fiction. There is some basis in fact; There was a city named Troy, there was a war between some of the Greek city-states and Troy. Troy was destroyed at the end of the War.
Helen of Sparta was probably based on a real person.
We know that Troy was a real place, and most of the classical figures in the myth feature prominently in local history of the period. The issue with Ancient Greece is that the viewed their religion as fact, so many of the historical documents of the time reference figures that we see as mythic, like Heracles and Achilles.
Most likely Helen was kidnapped by or ran off with Paris of Troy and Agamemnon used his brother's honor as an excuse to attack the rick city-state of Troy.
Both The Iliad and The Odyssey are attributed to Homer, although this is not necessarily fact.
