I haven't done any research into this but i would believe that summer in the northern hemisphere is caused by the northern part of the earth tilting towards the sun so that it is closer to it than the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa. Because the northern part of Earth tilts closer to the sun the southern hemisphere would be slightly further away causing colder seasons.

Yes. If the Earth were not tilted, there would be only one season. If Earth were more tilted (up to 45 degrees), the seasons would be more drastically different.
