to much suprise naruto is actually a genin because when he was gone with Jiriya he missed all the following chunin exames
But then again why would Tsunade-sama want to see all his techniques against Kakashi so quickly. Maybe fighting Kakashi was a test to become a chunin. Naruto did use his brains alot more than sakura that time didnt he?

By Naruto Shippuuden all the rookies are at least Chuunin except Sasuke and Naruto. Neji, Temari and Kankurou are Jounin, and Gaara is Kazekage.

naruto is acutally still a genin because he went away for 2 in a half years he could not retake the exams i think he will eventually though In the first episodes of shippuden, the other characters actually "tease" Naruto about how he was still a genin and they were all chunin. He never got a chance to take the chunin exams because in the last regular episode he went to train for about 2 years with Jariaya.
