It depends heavily on how you view society (and the genre) as a whole. For example, if you find religious insanity disturbing, than you'll certainly be frightened by Carrie's insane mother, who always scares me to death. If you find the image of Sissy Spacek's eyes bulging wide scary, than this will mess with you for years. Both actresses were both so frightening that they were both nominated the Academy Awards, very deserving nominations in my opinion. It also helps to be engaged in the subject matter which many can relate to, the subject matter being a helpless teenager who dreads high school for being ridiculed and abused both physically and psychologically, and then has the power to exact her revenge, which is handled with frightening execution. This is a psychological Horror, so don't expect blood and gore, although there is a decent amount of that. The movie is not about the blood and gore. It doesn't get its horror from gore.
