In my opinion it does. For one thing the manga was longer than the show and the anime left out alot of interesting stuff that's in the manga. In the manga you see who Tohru ends up with and some interesting thing about Akito and a lot more. When I saw the show i loved it, but when i heard that they left out the real ending I really wanted to know what really happened and the manga was a LOT better. I still love and watch the show but I highly recomend that you read the manga.

Now as Toru has taken up housing with the Sohma's, an ancient family cursed by the zodiac, Toru represents the Rice ball and the Sohma's represent the fruit.
