There is that possibility. When Christopher Meloni failed to renew his contract for season 13, Det. Stabler was written out by saying that he quit SVU over the tragic shooting in the squad room in the last episode of season 12. He wasn't killed off, he wasn't fired, which leaves the door open for a possible future appearance, if Chris Meloni can agree to a contract.
