So just think about it, you don't have to be a HOTgenius like L to fifer that out!**********I think both Near and Mello were first in line, because L didn't live long enough to choose between them. They were supposed to work together, but Mello abdicated (I can't spell) because he didn't want to work with Near. Near is suggested to be smarter than Mello, though this is not for certain. I read somewhere that the orphans at Wammy's House are "alphabetized" in some way. The letters closest to L are most likely to succeed him, hence Mello and Near being M and N. So if this rule is true, then technically Mello shold have been first in line to succeed L.
