They held a much lower status (the only gentlemanly liberal profession was the legal one). They were much less well-to-do, and their knowledge was, of course, much more rudimentary. Nevertheless, at that time medicine was breaking away with mediaeval legends and myths and it was rapidly becoming a genuine science (especially after the discovery of the circulation of blood). On the other hand, they could get a limited number or corpses for autopsies, only the hangman's "clients". This fact lead to a disturbing practice: the body snatching (freshly buried corpses were dug up during the night and taken to secret places for illegal post-mortems).
