Canada has 230 cities with a population of at least 15,000, 100 of which have a population of at least 45,000. Are only five of them worthy of the status of "major?"

What constitutes a "major" city is the subject of some discussion and debate. The factors one person might use to describe a city as "major" might not be the same used by someone else. Population would be just one of those factors.

Most Canadians would say that Vancouver, for example, is one of the five major cities in Canada. In terms of its population, however, it ranks eighth. The Toronto suburb of Mississauga ranks sixth, but few Canadians would describe Mississauga as a "major" city.

Some would rank Regina as a "major" city because it is home to one of the eight teams in the Canadian Football League, even though Regina's population ranks it in 18th place, behind even its sister city of Saskatoon.

Halifax would also be considered one of Canada's "major" cities, but it ranks 13th, behind the Toronto suburb of Brampton and the Vancouver suburb of Surrey. Among the 20 cities in Canada with the largest population, seven would be considered suburbs. Should a suburb be considered as a "major" city?

Canada's 2006 census listed two cities with a population in excess of one million: Montréal (1,620,693) and Toronto (2,503,281). Toronto is the fifth largest city in North America. The next three largest Canadian cities are: Calgary (988,193), Ottawa (812,129) and Edmonton (730,372).

Also to be considered is the metropolitan area of a city. Vancouver jumps to third place if the population of Canada's metropolitan areas is compared. Toronto's metropolitan population doubles to 5,113,149.

It is important to note that factors in addition to population would have to be considered in determining what constitutes a "major" city. For example, Halifax and Vancouver are both major ports, and thus their contribution to Canada's wealth is disproportionate to their population. Winnipeg's railway yards are among the largest in the world and are a cornerstone of Canada's transportation industry.

Without a clear definition of "major" the question can only be answered subjectively, and not with any significant degree of precision.
