I think you're thinking of the show "Starblazers"...this cartoon series took place mainly on a spaceship that looked like a boat called the Argo. If not, the only two Cartoons I can remember around that time frame is "Battle of the Planets" (also called G-Force) where all the cast members wore costumes that looked like birds. Another major cartoon would have been "Robotech", but I think that was more in the 80's.
