Basically, long story short, Akatsuki is acting and is concentrating on retrieving all of the Tailed Beasts and reform the Ten Tails, making Madara the jinchuriki of that. Various events happen, and Akatsuki succeed in retrieving 7 of the 9 beasts. They only left out Killer Bee, the 8 tails, and Naruto, the 9 tails. Behind the Scenes, however, Naruto is still trying to bring Sasuke back to Konaha. Eventually, Naruto defeats Pain, the leader of Akatsuki, but Madara Uchiha takes control. Now, the 4th Ninja War has begun. That is basically Shippuden.

The plot tells the story of Naruto Uzumaki, an adolescent ninja who constantly searches for recognition and aspires to become a Hokage, the ninja in his village who is acknowledged as the leader and the strongest of all. "Naruto" can be a typical inspiring blood manga, cause the vivid characters in the manga got their own faith for each other, especially for Naruto. Naruto Uzumaki trys to tell us that destiny/fate can be changed by ourselves, as long as we never give up.
