In 1858 India falls under British rule after the English overthrow the Moguls. In 1915, Mohandas Gandhi starts his campaign of nonviolence against the British rule. In 1947 India gains independence. In 1948, Gandhi is assassinated. In 1966, the first female Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi is elected. In 1983, India wins the world cup for cricket. In the year 2000, the population of India reaches over 1 billion people. Between 2004 and 2005 there are a series of floods, tsunamis, and earthquakes that devastate the southern communities along India's coast. Pratibha Patil is the first female president of India, and she is elected in 2007.
