While some kids(and others) mimicked it Live, the recording tecnique employed by David Seville ( real name Ross Bagdasarian) used regular recordings of songs speeded up to a higher R.P.M. to get the higher tones. nobody else used this effect, and the gimmick caught on with the Chipmunks. the argument can be made they ( musical group) were a take-off on the Ronettes and in fact this is even truer of the Chipettes. The producers were hep to the jive that Jeannette ( Real name Estelle) was visually impaired and very sensitive about this! She was ! a four-eyed Chipette!

Look at this analogy-Chipmunks were Simon, Theodore, and Alvin, now Veronica-Theodore, Estel-Simon, and Nedra, the youngest member of the troupe (underage for some years!)- ALVIN! By the way Dave Seville and Phil Spector are also in one-to-one correspondence! All Seville had to do was change the gender., by the way the current Chipetttes ,who are female are even more like the Ronettes!
