The character of David Seville was originated by singer/songwriter Ross Bagdasarian Sr. as a foil and father figure to three animorphic chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore in the 1958 novelty holiday song The Chipmunk Song, the character later appear in the animated television series The Alvin Show which aired on CBS television from 1961 to 1962. Following the sudden death of Bagdasarian of a massive heart attack on January 16, 1972 his son Ross Jr. assumed control of the Chipmunk franchise as well as the voice of David Seville and the voices of Alvin and Simon while his wife producer/director Janice Karman assumed the voice of Theodore in the 1980's animated series Alvin and the Chipmunks, it's spin-off Chipmunks Go To The Movies as well as the full length 1987 motion picture The Chipmunk Adventure.
