They were born in different places.

In the summer of 1850 both bought a farmhouse in Massachusetts, less miles from each other.

Hawthorne´s father died at early age meanwhile melville´s father lived more but he was not even capable of sustaining a business.

both got better acquainted when they went in an excursion a thunderstorm struck and they were forced to leave and take shelter.

Melville wrote poetry, something hawthorne wasn't accustomed to he was more of a stories and novels writer.

Both lived in trauma,this affected their writing and made them write very dark stories.

Melville cared more about his future. his father couldnt help with the money income for the house so he had to go in a ship to liverpool to find a better life. but hawthorne fell into a depression and just expected life to go by without him doing anything more than writing.

created a body of american literature they also has the help of Hawthorne´s neighbor Ralph Waldo Emerson.
