Gold was very valuable and was traded a lot in South Africa. Also they had very good location. Some were located bear key trade routes, which also helped in wealth. Yo welcome! LOL -anonymous

It depends. I heard that Africa has a lot of gold, jewels and salt along with many other raw resources. Where the money goes, I dont know :( but 3/4 of the whole nation is very poor- poor. Poverty is a sad feature of the nation. It can't be classified as a rich nation, poverty is a huge problem and there is a huge gap between the rich and poor.
South Africa's main export, or what they specialize in, is mainly minerals. To be more specific, they are very well-knwn for their large amount of diamonds and gold. Although, because of their colonialism, the Atlantic Slave Trade, and all of the poverty, the counry still isn't "rich," even though their minerals are valued highly.
The ancient kingdoms of Mali, Ghana, and Songhai grew very rich from the salt and gold trade before European Colonization.
