During WWI, the Supreme Commander of Allied Force was Ferdinand Foch. He was a French Marshall and given this new command in 1918.
There are four men who fit the title of commander. Joseph Joffre, Ferdinand Foch, Robert Nivelle, Philippe Pétain all held the title Commander-in-Chief of the French Army. Pétain, Foch, and Joffre also held the tile, Marshal of France. But by the end of the war Ferdinand Foch was named the Supreme Allied Commander.
Yes the french did win but so it was not just them it was the Allies that won ww1. The primary members of the Allies were the British Empire, France, Italy (after 1915) and the Russian Empire, although Russia pulled out before the end of the war. Japan, Greece, Belgium, Serbia, Montenegro, Romania and several other nations contributed to the Allied cause. The United States fought alongside Allied troops but never formally entered the alliance.
