What link is Kevin Costner to the Native Americans?

Mr Costner told a story on film, Dances With Wolves, in which he portrayed a soldier who learns to live with and admire the Native American peoples who occupy the same territory as his character. Mr Costner starred in, directed and produced this film, based on a book written by his friend, Michael Blake, who wrote most of the book in Mr Costner's basement. Mr Costner's grandmother, nicknamed 'Tig' was purported to be part Native American, and Mr Costner's production company is named after her. Mr Blake indicates that Mr Costner encouraged him to write Dances With Wolves. In working with the native-peoples actors who helped him tell this story, he was recognized by the Lakota Sioux, who acknowledged him formally as a 'brother'. Later, Mr Costner decided to build a resort in the North Dakota Black Hills. To date, the only evidence of this decision apparently is a magnificent sculpture of stampeding buffalo. You can read more about the Dunbar Resort and the buffalo sculpture, below.
