Joseph Von Fraunhofer as a German physicist who independently discovered (or rediscovered) dark "lines" in the emission spectra of the light emitted by the Sun. Fraunhofer carefully cataloged the precise frequencies of the light that was NOT being emitted by the Sun.

Many years later, two other scientists realized that these colors of light were associated with the spectra of particular elements present in the Sun.

The English chemist William Hyde Wollaston was in 1802 the first person to note the appearance of a number of dark features in the solar spectrum. In 1814, the German physicist Joseph von Fraunhofer independently rediscovered the lines and began a systematic study and careful measurement of the wavelength of these features.

Why can elements in a star be separated?

Because the spectrum of the star's light can be seen to have dark lines all the way through, and each element has its own set of dark lines in the star's spectrum.

What does a star's dark-line spectrum reveal?

The dark lines reveal the atoms that are associated with the stars atmosphere. The dark lines are atom energy absorption signatures.
