The first European settlers were successful because they found large tracts of fertile land that could be farmed with rich soil and a plentiful supply of fresh water as well as a generous rainfall. The climate was also quite similar to that found in the Mediterranean, making it very hospitable for a settlement.

Because of its position on the trade routes to the far east, sailing ships of the time all called at Cape Town for fresh provisions and the settlement became a thriving city.
