The French and Indian War was a war that occurred alongside the Seven Years' War in Europe. It began in 1754 and ended in 1763. The British and American colonists fought against the French presence in the Ohio River Valley, and Native American tribes allied variously with the two sides. The conflict in the colonies began as settlers moved farther into the Ohio Valley, and met with opposition from the resident French trappers and Indians. Britain sent support to the colonies, but the colonial militias did most of the fighting.

Two key forts that guarded the valley route between the colonies were Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Crown Point. Located on Lake Champlain in New York, Fort Ticonderoga was strategically important during the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. Fort Crown Point, situated nearby, served as a military stronghold and watchpoint for controlling access to the lake and the surrounding territories. Together, these forts played crucial roles in the defense and military strategy of the colonial forces.
