Canada has never been officially communist. However, the Liberal Party has often taken the parts of communism that they have found more juicy (such as heavy taxes and gun control) and used them. The closest Canada has ever been to becoming communist was when Pierre Trudeau enacted the National Energy Program, which involved rich provinces (namely Alberta) redistrubuting their surpluses to poorer provinces.
There are four communist parties and several communist movements in Canada. The New Democratic Party is the most powerful.
