He was bad in the sense that we are all bad, i.e. There is none righteous, no not one. And let's not forget Bathsheba; however, The Bible clearly states that he was a man after God's own heart.
How do you reconcile the two? You don't - God does. It is the same with us. We are sinners, plain and simple. The only way to be reconciled to God is for Him to change your heart.

He did not honor God.
He did not keep the Sabbath.
He dishonored his parents.
He murdered.
He committed adultery.
He lied.
He coveted his neighbor's wife.
Yet he was called by God " a man after His (God's) own heart.
And to this day the Jews say he is the greatest king they every had.
