Sam Houston was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia in 1793. His father, Samuel Houston, served under George Washington in Morgan's Rifle Brigade during the American Revolution. Interesting facts about Sam Houston: 1. He is the only man who has served as the governor of more than 1 state. Tennessee and Texas. 2. He lived with the Cherokee Indians on two separate occasions for a total of 6 years and was made a citizen of their tribe. He advocated for the rights of Native Americans his entire life. This was a very unpopular position to take. 3. Sam also served as a U.S. Congressman from Tennessee, the first President of the Republic of Texas (and also its third President), and was one of the first two U.S. Senators from Texas before becoming Governor. 4. Abraham Lincoln offered Houston 50,000 troops and a Major General's commission if he would try to keep Texas in the Union. Houston, staunchly pro-union, considered this but ultimately decided that he could not take up arms against his fellow Texans. However, he refused to swear allegiance to the Confederacy, choosing instead to be removed from office as Governor and forced into retirement and (in Southern eyes) disgrace.
