The Jazz Singer, in black and white, was the first feature-length film with sound to be widely distributed (in 1927). However, according to film historian Tim Dirks at filmsite.org, it was preceded in the same year by another movie with sound: Sunrise, directed by famed German director F. W. Murnau and produced in Hollywood (see link).
