Not really. According to Gene, they were friendly on set (with Richard often greeting his co-star with a hug), but they didn't spend much time together otherwise. It is interesting to note, however, that Gene has also said that he would have liked to pal around with Richard more, but because of Richard's drug problems and the fact that he "had his own crowd", it just didn't happen.
