ancient Rome's vast expanse of territory was home to slaves almost anywhere one looked. After the revolt of Spartacus, I am not aware of any benefits that came about.
The slaves were treated harshly and they eventually became a problem based on economics as slaves were used as field workers on large estates, thereby making free Roman citizens hard pressed at times to find work.
