Yes, there were people trapped in there, they were to slow to react to the disaster and when they finally got out to deck, all the lifeboats were taken.(there was supposed to be 36, but they ended up with only 16!) The lucky few people who made it until the Carpathia, which was another ship to come rescue the Titanic, but the others weren't so lucky and got stuck on the bottom... and sank deeply in the chilled waters, dying within a few minutes. However, the captain vowed to go down with the ship and stayed on even if there was a chance for him to survive
Note: The captain was very old already.
Another note: The captain's name was Edward John Smith.
This is not known for sure, but it is known that the water tight doors that were sealed 11 minutes after hitting the iceberg could and most likely did trap some of the engine crew cutting any exit for them.
Not intentionally- one or two couples found that their doors had jammed and they couldn't get out, but fortunately other passengers came to the rescue and broke the cabin doors down to set them free. They were reprimanded by stewards for doing so, but this was only before most of the crew knew how serious the disaster was, and afterwards they said that had they known that the ship was actually SINKING, theyd've done the same thing.
The steerage class passengers were, indeed, confined below decks for a period of time, but this was only intended to be temporary until full evacuation procedures had got under way. There were fears that otherwise, the Third Class passengers might panic and try to rush the lifeboats and create complete chaos, especially as many of them were of nationalities who in those days were deemed to be prone to panic and become hysterical in an emergency such as Irish, French, Italian, Arabs and so on (this is not, of course, true, but it was a widely held belief in Anglo-American society at the time).
