Before 1947, it was controlled by the British Empire (called the Raj), under the control of the Viceroy of India, who in turn reported to the Emperor/Empress. Before that, there was a period of around 300 years when much of India was ruled by Muslim invaders originaly from central Asia and descendants of Tamerlane, called the Mughals.
