Movies had two operable handicaps prior to the invention- or rather development of sound in l927. One was ( silent running) and the other a tendency towards action-dominated shorts- certain categories of films were amiably adapted to this end- Westerns for example. One of the first LONG as opposed to sporting shorts ( often done on Horse Racing (Muybridge) and Boxing due in part to predictable time cycles. feature films was The Birth Of A Nation - still controversial- in l9l5. I saw the silent film (the Eagle) at Loew"s a few weeks back with Live organ accompaniment. It was a Catherine II era Russian spy drama of sorts. Title character- the Black Eagle was played by Valentino as rebel Cossack officer and a sort of Russian well, Red ( Czars used red and gold as colors too!) Robin Hood or Green hornet type- on raids he wore a mask over traditional Russian hat! Good stuff. Louise Dresser as Catherine II and one other female as the paramour of the Black Eagle- within the limits of the technique- not at all bad! This was made in the early 20"s Warner Brothers introduced Sound in l927 which took off with a Bang! Bugs Bunny made the scene the same year- an added attraction when the projectors were being rewound!
