Indianapolis, the capital of Indiana, is the second-largest capital city by population in the U.S. (after Phoenix).

Indiana is one of only two states that in the 2012 presidential election did not vote for the same party's candidate as in 2008 (Indiana and North Carolina, as well as the 2nd Congressional District of Nebraska, voted for Obama in 2008 but voted for Romney in 2012).

Indiana is/was the home state of one U.S. President, Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893), and five U.S. Vice Presidents,

  • Schuyler Colfax (1869-1873),
  • Thomas A. Hendricks (1885),
  • Charles W. Fairbanks (1905-1909),
  • Thomas R. Marshall (1913-1921) and
  • Dan Quayle (1989-1993).

The Indianapolis 500 is held every year on Memorial Day weekend (the day before the last Monday of May).

Indiana used to have some parts where the time was UTC-5 year-'round, some parts where the time was UTC-5 only during Standard Time, and some parts where the time was UTC-5 only during Daylight Saving Time, but ever since 2006 the entire state observes Daylight Saving Time. Six counties near Chicago and six counties near Evansville are on Central Time (UTC-6/UTC-5), and the rest of the state is on Eastern Time (UTC-5/UTC-4).

Among the 50 U.S. states, Indiana ranks 38th in area, 15th in population and 16th in average population density.

The top ten Indiana cities by population are...

  1. Indianapolis (827,609)
  2. Fort Wayne (255,824)
  3. Evansville (117,825)
  4. South Bend (101,081)
  5. Carmel (81,564)
  6. Bloomington (81,381)
  7. Hammond (80,757)
  8. Gary (80,221)
  9. Fishers (79,127)
  10. Muncie (70,080)

(Populations shown here are July 2011 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.)

Michael Jackson, David Letterman and Kurt Vonnegut are from Indiana.
