A good start is Nick at Night with Cosby Show and Full House. There are some reality shows that are pretty clean. Some are Foxes Don't Forget the Lyrics and abc has Shaq's Big Challenge and America's Funniest Videos (which you can also see on Nick at Night). TV Land is probably the best channel with quite a few options, my favorite is Little House on the Prairie. But the very best family TV show is abc's Extreme Home Makeover.

Kids

Disney (Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Bambi, etc.) and Disney Pixar (The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Toy Story, etc.) films tend to have great lessons and most parents wouldn't have a problem with content.

The American Girl series have great historical films and are clean.

The Black Stallion and The Young Black Stallionare both un-animated horse stories for children.

Charlotte's Web and Because of Winn-Dixie are both films based on classic children's novels.

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is an animated movie about a horse. Although the animals don't talk, the soundtrack is great!

Newsies is a musical about the true story of the 1899 Newsie strike. This movie is great for kids and adults alike!

Upper-Elementary Kids

The Sound of Music is an Oscar award winner for the entire family.

Dreamer is the true story of a racehorse, and is good for upper elementary aged children and teenagers.

Ramona and Beezus, Another Cinderella Story, Nanny McPhee Returns, and Hugo are all films upper-elementary children would love.

Secondhand Lions, starring Haley Joel Osment and Robert Duvall is a coming-of-age story of a young boy who spends the summer with his crazy uncles, who went missing for 40 years and are rumored to have stolen millions. This is a great family movie for kids and adults alike!

Soul Surfer is the true story of a young surfer who loses her arm.

Fiddler on the Roof is a classic musical about a poor Jewish milkman trying to wed his five daughters.

Tweens and Teens

Frequency is a scifi film about a man (Jim Caviezel) who reconnects with his father (Dennis Quaid) who died 30 years earlier in a fire. Although the man saves his father, he must fix the consequences. This movie is best for those 12+ and is rated PG-13.

Life is Beautiful is an Oscar winner told in two parts. The first part is about a man who uses his sense of humor to catch the attention of an already-engaged woman. The second part is about how the man saves his sons life with that same humor. Although rated PG-13, this has no actual sex or nudity, no on-screen violence and one mild use of "jacka**". Best for 12+.

Catch Me If You Can is a true story starring Leonardo DiCaprio about a young man who scams millions and poses as a pilot, doctor, and legal processor - all before his nineteenth birthday. This Spielberg comedy-drama is rated PG-13 for some sensuality, and an F-word.

The Blind Side, Remember The Titans, and Radio are popular football movies; all incredible true stories.

Taken is the story of a man (Liam Neeson) who rescues his teenage daughter from a human trafficking ring.

Meet the Parents is the first in a trilogy of PG-13 comedies. Although some sexuality show up, this is an overall great movie with noteworthy themes.

Les Miserables (2012) and The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) are somewhat similar and both are fantastic editions of classic novels. Les Miserables is a musical about a man who finds redemption after stealing a loaf of bread. The Count of Monte Cristo is about a man who is falsely thrown into prison and later seeks revenge. Both are rated PG-13.

The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler is a Hallmark movie about the true story of a Catholic social worker who rescues 2,500 Jewish children during World War II. This movie, although not graphic, would be best for teenagers.

The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Ringsare great trilogies.

Although rated R, the following films have good messages or are true stories, and are best for older teens and adults:

• Argo (2012) - based on a true story
• Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
• Band of Brothers (2001) - 10 part series set during WWII. There is one sex scene (episode 9) and a lot of violence and profanity, but it is a true story with GREAT themes)
• Defiance (2008)
• 127 Hours (2010) - a true story not for the faint of heart. The only scene that is especially gruesome is when the protagonist cuts of his hand to survive.
