What are parts of icebergs?

Icebergs look small on top but are huge underneath. They are also very sharp. The iceberg that sunk the titanic scraped up the bottom of the ship and allowed water to get in, which weighed the titanic down, causing it to sink.

Icebergs are large pieces of ice that has broken off from a snow-formed glacier (or ice shelf). It can be frozen into pack ice. Icebergs can look really small at the top but then at the bottom they are big. So when the Titanic hit that ice berg it looked small at the top and then when it actually hit it killed most of the people in the ship. The iceberg that it hit was named "Growler" which was less than 3.3 feet in height and less than 16 feet in length.

Other icebergs' height and length are, Bergy Bit which is 3.3-16 ft in height and 16-49 ft in length, Small 16-49 ft in height and 49-200 ft in length, Medium 49-148 ft in height and 200-390 ft in length, Large 148-246 ft in height and 390-660 ft in length, and Very Large 246 ft in height and 660 ft in length.

The term "iceberg" refers to chunks of ice larger than 5 meters (16 feet) across. If they are smaller than that then they are known as bergy bits. You can only see about 10% of the icebergs outside of the water. "Scientists have noticed that the way icebergs break up when they reach warmer waters mirrors the disintegration of Antarctic ice shelves."1

Many people think that icebergs and glaciers are the same but they are different. Icebergs might have broken off from a glacier or it can be part of an ice shelf. Glaciers cover about ten percent of Earth but, during the Ice Age they covered nearly one-third of Earth's surface. Glaciers are on land and icebergs are in the water. Glaciers are found in almost 47 different counties. They can range from the equivalent of a football field to more than 100 miles. If all the glaciers melted the water level would rise 210 feet worldwide. Mount Kilimanjaro is a glacier that sits on the equator.
