The term "West Indies" came about when Christopher Columbus set out on a voyage to Asia to get to India rather than going east to avoid the moors with whom the Europeans were at war with, under the assumption that the world was alot smaller than it really was. On arrival to the Caribbean Columbus called it the "West Indies" still thinking he was west of the Indian sub-continent
