The black codes were codes to make you inhuman and inferior to white people for examples: you could not look a white man in the face, if a white man or woman was coming your way you would have to get off the road or side walk and let them pass, you must not leave the plantation with a pass and you had to be back by a certain time, you could not hit a white man, you could not sassy a white women in other words you would have to agree with her and she could slap you and there was nothing you could do if you value your life and this is just a few of these "Black Codes".

What is the definition of black codes?

black codes, in U.S. history, series of statutes passed by the ex-Confederate states, 1865-66, dealing with the status of the newly freed slaves. They varied greatly from state to state as to their harshness and restrictiveness. Although the codes granted certain basic civil rights to blacks (the right to marry, to own personal property, and to sue in court), they also provided for the segregation of public facilities and placed severe restrictions on the freedman's status as a free laborer, his right to own real estate, and his right to testify in court. Although some Northern states had black codes before the Civil War, this did not prevent many northerners from interpreting the codes as an attempt by the South to reenslave blacks. The Freedmen's Bureau prevented enforcement of the codes, which were later repealed by the radical Republican state governments.

Why were black codes created?

The black codes were basically created to replace slavery and make Black people in the South subservient again.

What is the black codes?

The Black Codes were laws passed on the state and local level mainly in the rural Southern states in the United States to restrict the civil rights and civil liberties of African Americans. While some northern states also passed legislation discriminating against African Americans before the Civil War, the term Black Codes is most commonly associated with legislation passed by Southern states after the Civil War in an attempt to control the labor, movements and activities of African Americans.
