What are some of the similarities between a modern submarine and an older submarine?

Aside from the obvious fact of traveling in the water, the only other real similarity is both use chemical processes to convert oxygen in seawater for breathing use. Submarines have more in common with mammals (whales, dolphins) than they do fish.

∙ 10y agoAside from the advent of nuclear power in 1957 aboard the USS Nautilus (SSN-571), very little has changed from John Holland's first U.S. Navy DE submarine SS-1. The patents he established in the latter part of the 19th century and those designs have been improved upon, but the basic science and operation of the SS-1 and modern submarines hasn't changed very much. Even nuclear submarines have backup diesel-electric propulsion.
The biggest change aside from nuclear power is modern hull design. As nuclear power allows for greater speed, hull design was improved to allow for better speed and maneuverability underwater than on the surface. Previous designs had the submarine normally running on the surface at higher speeds, then running on battery power a slow speeds underwater while avoiding contacts o prosecuting a target.
Weapons, sensor platforms (Sonar and Radar, EW, etc.) and crew habitability have also all improved as a result of the power provided by a nuclear reactor.
